Crisis Canines of the Midlands was founded by Justin and Rebecca Smith in 2022 after certifying K9 “Glory” as the second Crisis Response Therapy K9 in the state of Iowa. Justin is a Critical Care Paramedic and Battalion Chief in the Knoxville Fire Department. Rebecca is a Veterinarian and co-owner of Midland Prairie Veterinary Services. The mission of Crisis Canines of the Midlands is to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of Crisis Response Therapy Dog teams in First Responder agencies, so that these teams may provide Animal Assisted Crisis Response within their communities to support the mental health of individuals affected by, and respond to, crises and disasters. There are currently 15 teams in our training program in First Responder agencies across the state.
